Brambilla takes fourth in opening race

Giorgio Brambilla took 4th position in a bunch sprint finish at the GP Costa degli Etruschi, an excellent debut for the LEOPARD TREK continental team. Elia Viviani (Liquigas) won.

21-year-old Brambilla (ITA) missed out of the podium in his debut race for LEOPARD TREK. He was piloted by fellow countryman Eugenio Alafaci, who still managed to finish 15th.

The GP was raced in harsh conditions, with temperatures around the freezing point throughout the race. A breakaway of three ambitious men went clear, as expected, and was caught back with ten kilometres to go.

Director Adriano Baffi: “I asked the guys to stay close to each other and communicate a lot. Whenever a break of more than 6 or 7 got clear, they had to respond. They did a great job. When a sprint was imminent, every one invested in Giorgio’s sprint. Eugenio Alafaci was the last man to stand by Giorgio, who can be proud of this performance.”

Brambilla: “It’s amazing to finish 4th in a race that has some really strong men with lots of experience. Viviani and Petacchi were the favourites to win this race and I’m very, very happy with my result.”
